Lee Young-Sun
Abstract
Many students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience difficulties in communication and/or social interactions so that they may be at greater risk for peer victimization. The aim of the current study was to build an understanding of bullying and victimization experiences among youth with ASD through mothers¡¯ perspectives and exploring major issues related their experiences. Twelve mothers having an adolescent son or daughter with ASD were interviewed and share their children¡¯s experiences. Qualitative content analysis identified four main themes with 13 subthemes as follows: (1) school victimization experiences, (2) problem behaviors, (3) contributing factors to bullying and victimization, and (4) parents¡¯ needs and suggestions. We also discussed implications for understanding difficulties of students with ASD who have experienced bullying and victimization in terms of practical support for those students.
